Project: Beppu Scale

“SAISEI JOURNAL VOL:1” is published by the Regenerative Architecture Institute, which designed Amaneku Beppu Yurari, to record the subtleties of the city. Using “SAISEI JOURNAL VOL:1” as a guide, Gottingham chose “Beppu Scale”, a phenomenon that is characteristic of Beppu City, as the subject of his photographic work. The “Beppu Scale” is a series of local and historical connections and structures created by local residents. It may be the object of an architect’s aspiration. A total of 10 objects were photographed, including buildings within walking distance of the Hotel AMANEK Beppu.
　A special filter called the Mirage Filter was used to take the photographs, which allows the photographer to divide a single subject into multiple parts. Mirage filters emerged in the 1980s and can be considered a retro technology.
　Rather than attaching the Mirage filter to the lens, Gottingham placed it between the camera and the “Beppu Scale” and photographed the filter itself to create his work. The photographs themselves take on a Beppu Scale character because the retro filters are used in a way that deviates from their traditional usage.
